For the Elegy piece, I made the choice to stick to my cartoony style but still render it more than I normally would. The setting is inside Ben Kenobi’s hut on Tatooine from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Although a part of elegy is a longing for a life that never was (which I would have depicted with Luke staring at the twin suns, from earlier in the film). The reason I chose this scene is because it represents two aspects of elegy instead of one. This scene is when Old Ben reminisces about the past, telling Luke of how he and Luke’s father fought together in the Clone Wars, and also speaks gravely how Vader hunted down the remaining Jedi…a result of the apocalypses touched on earlier. Clearly, Ben is mourning the loss of the past, referring to the present as the “Dark Times.” Another aspect of Elegy in this scene was of hope. Luke is literally the title of the film; He’s the new hope. The moment Ben gives him Anakin’s old lightsaber and Luke sees the message of his sister (not knowing it’s his twin) pleading for help, the events that change the galaxy are set into motion. The final push was for Luke’s family to be murdered by the Empire.
